For asthmatics and eczema sufferers, cleansing their home of the dust mites that trigger their allergic reactions is one way of controlling their problem – but this does not help them at all when they travel. The average hotel room, especially in more up-market hotels, has deep-pile carpets and acres of thick curtains and soft furnishings, each harbouring enough mites to comprehensively ruin their night’s sleep and trigger very troublesome symptoms.

Sleepless nights are not conducive to enjoyable and restful holidays and, if you need to travel on business, can make stressful meetings and deadlines infinitely harder to deal with.
So a hotel room cleansed of 97.4% of its dust mites and associated allergens would be a wonderful boon for asthmatic or eczematous travellers be they on holiday or travelling for work. And thanks to Valentine Tomin and Richard Marshall, whose young son suffers from severe asthma and eczema triggered by dust mites, this is now a possibility.
They set up the Healthy Sleep Company and devised a process that includes UVC light, patented cleaning solutions, high intensity vacuuming with HEPA filters and dry steam at temperatures over 150 degrees centigrade. Together these remove 97.4% of potential allergens, do no harm the furnishings, take just a few hours to carry out and last for up to a year.
Hotels that have already tried the ‘Healthy Sleep Room’ system – and have a number of satisfied allergic customers booking return visits – include the The Millenium Copthorne Hotel, Slough-Windsor, the Corus Hotel in Hyde Park, London, the Hayley Conference Centre at Sedgebrook Hall in Northamptonshire – and the Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel and Spa in the stunning Usk Valley in Monmouthshire for whom the idea of providing allergy free rooms (they have two) fitted in perfectly with their concept of a healthy retreat in a pure clean place.
